Pee Wee Ellis, born in Florida in 1941 and raised in Lubbock Texas, was playing in New York in 1965 when he got the call to join the James Brown Revue. Such was his impact on this famous R&B and Soul band that he soon became band leader and was responsible for The Godfather of Soul’s greatest hits, such as; ‘Cold Sweat’, ‘I got you (I feel Good)’ and ‘Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag’. These and many other recordings with Brown founded a funk revolution that is still being copied and sampled the world over 40 years on.

Pee Wee has worked with many great names, including Hank Crawford, George Benson, Esther Philips and Sonny Stitt and in the 80’s became musical director for Van Morrison and was responsible some of that decades finest albums – ‘Into the Music’, ‘Live in Belfast’, ‘Beautiful Vision’, ‘Inarticulate Speech of the Heart’ and ‘Common One’.

Gareth Williams, born in 1968, made his professional debut as keyboard player and musical director for the jazz hip-hop band US3 (whose most celebrated hit was ‘Cantaloop’) and has subsequently played with many jazz greats including Art Farmer, George Coleman, Bud Shank, James Moody and Dave Liebman, plus top British musicians such as Jim Mullen, Martin Taylor, Martin Drew, Tommy Smith, Tim Garland, Clark Tracey, Gwyneth Herbert and Iain Bellamy. Gareth’s latest project ‘The Gareth Williams Power Trio’ released the critically acclaimed album ‘Shock’ in 2009, of which Mojo Magazine said ‘a prodigiously talented pianist…a joyous, uncompromising celebration of sophistication, musicality, muscularit, it’s shockingly good’.

After over 40 years in music business Pee Wee Ellis is one of the most acclaimed saxophonists of his generation and one of the most sought-after arrangers and MD’s in the industry. His musical range and pursuit of excellence has gained him renown amongst his peers and the enduring respect of ensuing generations of musicians….and together with Gareth Williams he plays Lanercost Priory on Saturday October 16^th !!

The concert starts at 7.30pm and refreshments will be available throughout the evening.

Friday 30th April
Jazz Night at the Cricket Club
As usual the last Friday in the month is Open Mic Night and budding local musicians have the chance to play in front of an audience.
Tom Adams co-ordinates activity and for this Friday he has some special guests for us all to enjoy

Warming up will be
Phil Furneaux
playing some mellow jazz saxophone.

Following this we have the privilege of hosting the band
'Jazzlines'.
The band consist of:
Mike on electronic keyboard, John on bass guitar and Jimmy on drums. The band has been an entity for well over 10 years in various guises and with different personnel. The composite musicians have experience in many other forms. Mike does quite a lot with musical show societies, John played for many years with a popular 60s and 70s band 'Rewind' and Jimmy was actually a pro on the road for at least 25 years playing in bands backing, for example, Freddie Starr and Cilla Black.

Their set is mostly standard tunes in 32 and 12 bar formats, most are played in a modern swing style with a good number with a bossa rythmn as an alternative.

Geltsdale Ale will be available on tap!

Geltsdale Brewery is proud to announce the arrival of our latest ale:
Coco Romano (ABV 5.2%).
It's a smooth and luxuriously chocolaty dark ale made using chocolate malt and Fairtrade cocoa, to celebrate the Fairtrade status of Hadrians Wall.
As you read this, it is on it's way to be bottled and the new artwork for the label is hot of the press!
Watch out for the purple label!
